Storytelling: Is It Essential for Your Business Growth?

Storytelling is one of the very natural and effective tools that people use to communicate and interact with each other.

In business, storytelling plays an important role in sending important messages, engaging and aligning employees, and ultimately implementing the organization’s vision. Truly, “organizations that embed storytelling into their strategic planning efforts effectively tap into their human nature to bring more meaning, focus and productivity not only to their work, but also their workforce” (Baker, 2014).

Many companies spend too much time, energy and effort on strategic planning; yet, does not take into consideration focusing on the best ways to engage and align employees with the plans.

Employee engagement and alignment, as stated by Bill Baker, are critical to the ultimate success of your business’ strategic plans since:

  • the goals will “resonate in the hearts and minds of your employees” which enables them to see beyond the strategy;
  • it helps them picture themselves in this plan and understand their role to bring your plan to life;
  • it helps them focus and align their energy to realize the plan;
  • it “infuses your strategic planning work with meaning and relevance, making real for your employees the theories and principles that emerged from your strategic planning efforts”;
  • it helps a person see what everyone sees and think what everyone thinks; hence, connects people’s ideas, and unifies thoughts, motivations, and actions;
  • it ensures that everyone in the business will fully embrace the broader organizational vision and brand positioning that your strategic plan focuses on.
