If a politician is struggling to build alliances, manage the office and communicate with the staff although he/she has won the elections, has a strong agenda and hired a top-notch team, then it is the time to call in political coaches!
“Life coaches can help politicians, too.”
Some political leaders, just like CEOs, are great at what they do. Yet, “they’re so darn prickly no one like working with them”. Thereof, political coaches are essential to help statesmen or women overcome the obstacles and develop a creative strategy to get things done.
Geoff Thomson, co-founder of the Political Coaching Organization, considers that people who are new to politics are “more receptive to coaching than career politicians.” However, he ensures that his team’s goal is to help politicians determine what they stand for ethically and politically, be the most effective as who they are, deliver the message they want to deliver, and have a clear plan to reach their vision.
Furthermore, the political leadership coach Donna Zajonc claims that there are many coaches that are ready to help and give advice to people in politics. Nonetheless, what is more important is that leaders have someone who they trust; accordingly can observe their strengths and weaknesses, aid them build their strengths, and boost their confidence in their leadership abilities.
According to Zajonc too, “in the 1980s and 90s, corporate coaching and sports psychology both became associated with improving the way that people play the game, whether in the boardroom or on the tennis court. I realized that politicians could benefit from the same sort of concept.”
That is to say, political coaches are able to help leaders find what they are good at and do more of it.
Professionals also guide politicians to come up with long-term success strategies by making them “think through their vision and stick to it.”
“If you’re going to go to Congress and be one of 400-plus members, how do you position yourself to get noticed? If you want to run for president one day and you’re a lowly congressman, how do you achieve that trajectory? […] It’s about how to win friends and influence people, not just win elections”!
